first time to pay taxes in canada

Would you suggest I see someone who is the equivilant to a cpa. I
do not have a clue as to who to see and what to do and think I need
help ,at least for the first time.. I don't make a great deal but I
do recieve social security and some income from an annuity - I am not
legally married but do reside with fiance and I wonder what bearing
that has on the issue . I just became a perm. res. last Dec but it
took 7 years. I always paid U.S. fed and even state tax.(just in
case I never got to be permenant res. . whew..... sorry to go on and
on. Just where do I find this type of person to help me out ? I am
in Quebec

I replied directly on how to find a tax preparer in Canada (or any
other country.)

Let us take your points in sequence.

You have resided in Canada for the past 7 years. This is separate from
your permanent resident card and suggests that you have a few years of
taxes left unfiled. In Canada and Quebec, you have a filing obligation
if you reside in the country/province. You will be granted credit for
taxes paid to the country where the income is effectively connected to
(Sounds like the US.)

You may have made less than the required to have a tax obligation,
though that does not excuse the filing obligation.

Fiancee: Congratulations on the engagement. You may not be married but
you may be common-law for Canadian Tax Purposes. If there are no
children involved, you may reside up to one year together without
being common-law. After that, your taxes are inter-related and should
be prepared by one person. I leave it to the two of you to determine
how long you've been together. Please realize that the governments do
have the means to identify people living together.

Quebec: Quebec has its own different tax rules. You will need someone
who knows Quebec.

I recommend, as I did in my private email directly to you, that you
obtain referrals from friends as to who they have used in the past. As
you probably have several years, I would not use QuickTax or another
self-prepared return this round simply because of the number of
interactions between the years. Also, you will need someone versed in
Voluntary Disclosure Programs, both the Federal and the Quebec
programs, which have different criteria. You need someone who can
guide the return(s) through the process and has worked with the
International Tax Services Office in Ottawa as well as Revenu Quebec.

As I mentioned, this is something which I do, but you may prefer
someone whom you have received a referral. I leave the choice to you.

At least in Canada the judge does more than whine when there message Problem, AK, is that these arguments are all 'red herrings' to detract from the real issue. The income tax, here and in the USA, is administered against legal fictions which are created and owned by the creating body
