I've been using the basic tax package from what was Tobias
(now HR Block?) for years and this year I think I should
look into tax averaging. I don't think the basic package has
the tax averaging options or a least I didn't find it.
Can someone recommend what level package (ie, a vendor and
precise name of the package) that has this feature? Thanks.

If you mean "income averaging", that option is all but history.
Some farmers and fishermen, and certain people who receive pension plan
distributions may elect income averaging.

Yeah, but if my income went WAY down? Do you know what
packages are available?

NONE. Income averaging is not an option.
If you are looking for cheap or free software, then ask.

Maybe a tax year 1985 program? Did they exist then?

OK, if you say that income averaging is not an option, fine.
But what does that have to do with cheap or free software?
If it's not an option, then no software would provide this
for my tax return, cheap or otherwise.
